Dullstroom and surrounds
The village of Dullstroom is situated om the eastern escarpment of Mpumalanga, South Africa, an
area often referred to as the eastern highlands. At an altitude of 2000m above
sea level the climate is sub-Alpine, often shrouded in mist. This, combined with
the grassy, rocky hills, lends an air of the Scottish highlands to the area.
Summer temperatures seldom touch 30°C, averaging around 22°C during the day, and
winters tend to be cooler than most of the country. It's not uncommon in winter
to see temperatures dropping below freezing overnight, which is why many folks
flock to Dullstroom to enjoy sitting around a warm log fire, sipping on a good
whisky, brandy or wine.
Shopping in Dullstroom can be a rewarding experience, with art galleries, curio
shops, and a variety of retail outlets selling clothing and local fare.
There are around 30 eateries in and around the village, providing a mix of menus
from Mediterranean to South African, as well as a number of convivial pubs and
bars.
Dullstroom is 2 hours away from the Kruger National Park, and 1 hour away from
the Panorama Route, which includes Long Tom Pass, Sabie, Pilgrim's Rest, Graskop
and Blyde RIver Canyon. Being only 2 hours away from Johannesburg it is the
ideal stopover for tourists en route to the Lowveld area from Johannesburg's O R
Tambo International Airport.
There is plenty to do,
from fly-fishing to trap shooting, shopping, whisky tasting, horse riding, quad
biking, or why not simply relax and enjoy the scenery and open-air tranquility?
Please remember to book well in advance for long weekends and holidays. We have
no high or low season, but winter months are generally busier than summer,
perhaps due to the appeal of that "sherry in front of a log-fire"?
